Peñiscola
Peniscola is Known as the city in the sea, because of it’s rocky headland, making it almost completely surrounded by sea.
Peñiscola is full of historic buildings and the city retains the look of a medieval fortress upon a rock.
The city’s castles and churches date back to the middle ages, with Peniscola castle dominating the walled city.
We had a good feel of Peniscola town, with the pretty narrow streets and visitor bustle.
Cervezas Badum(micro brewery)
Located in the centre of Peniscola, the micro brewery offers a chance to taste the craft beers and watch the process.
You also have the opportunity to purchase some from their shop and we were delighted with our carryout!
La Casa de les Petxines
The house of shells is a must see! A narrow structure covered in shells is certainly unique and there’s a sweet story behind it.
Once an ordinary house, until the husband, the owner of the house, decorated it as a surprise for his wife, as her favourite pass time was collecting seashells!
Castillo de Peñiscola
Only the rocks remain of what was once a great castle with beautiful gardens and frescoes.
The castle has been used in several movies, including Game of Thrones.
It costs approximately 5 euro to enter the castle grounds.
For the rest its easy to see for free from several angles!
There is also a church beside the castle which is worthy of a shot!
Jardines Castillo Peniscola garden
Below the castle is the beautiful gardens, which are a delight to walk around on a sunny day.
Lighthouse
The Lighthouse has been operating since away back in 1899. Its white cylindrical tower, rises to a height of 11 meters and is perched on a rocky top, offering panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea as well as Peniscola Castillo below.
Blow hole
Sea caves with inland blowholes are not rare. However, it is uncommon to come across one erupting around a cluster of buildings within the medieval town.
The blow hole in the middle of the city creates rumbles, throughout the town, especially when the seas anger blows from the 210-foot-long blowhole, sometimes so forcefully it makes the nearby buildings shake!
The beach
The beach was right beside the car park and in convenient walking distance to the castle. A lovely sandy stretch, but too overlooked for our liking.
Eating / drinking recommendations
Since it was a quick day trip, we just popped into one little restaurant overlooking the Mediterranean, called Boca.
Would we recommend Peniscola?
Absolutely! We wish we had more time there. A few days at least. Just to get lost down those charming narrow streets.
